Ghana seeks to boost trade with Kenyan dairy factory

The High Commissioner was warmly received by Mount Kenya Milk’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kenneth Gitonga, alongside a team of senior managers and staff.

KENYA – The High Commissioner of Ghana to Kenya, His Excellency Damptey Bediako Asare, visited the Mount Kenya Milk factory on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, to explore opportunities for a robust dairy partnership between Ghana and Kenya.

The High Commissioner was warmly received by Mount Kenya Milk’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kenneth Gitonga, alongside a team of senior managers and staff.

According to a statement from the factory, the visit aimed to foster a strategic alliance in the dairy sector, leveraging Kenya’s advanced dairy industry and Ghana’s expanding market.

The discussions focused on potential exports of Kenyan dairy products, including milk powder and processed cheese, to Ghana, as well as knowledge-sharing initiatives to enhance dairy farming techniques.

“This partnership holds immense potential for both our nations,” said High Commissioner Asare during the visit. “By combining Kenya’s expertise in dairy production with Ghana’s growing demand, we can create sustainable economic benefits.”

The High Commissioner highlighted the importance of such collaborations in boosting intra-African trade, a key objective of the AfCFTA, which both countries have ratified.

Mr. Gitonga expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that Mount Kenya Milk, one of Kenya’s leading dairy processors, is eager to expand its footprint in West Africa.

We are honored to host His Excellency and look forward to building a strong relationship with Ghana’s dairy sector,” he stated.

The CEO emphasized the factory’s commitment to quality and innovation, which could meet the needs of Ghanaian consumers.

A report by the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency indicates that trade between Kenya and Ghana has been on an upward trajectory, with Kenyan exports to Ghana reaching US$45 million in 2024.

Dairy products, alongside tea and horticultural goods, are seen as key areas for further growth.

The visit follows recent trade initiatives, including the Ghana Trade Week in Nairobi in October 2024, where both nations showcased their commitment to deepening commercial ties.

High Commissioner Asare’s visit also aligns with ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, as evidenced by his participation in events like the Ghana Food Carnival in March 2025.

The factory tour concluded with a commitment to further discussions, with both parties expressing confidence in a mutually beneficial partnership that could set a model for regional trade cooperation.
