CHI Limited’s adoption of paper straws responds to this pressing need for eco-friendly alternatives.
NIGERIA – CHI Limited, a leading Nigerian beverage and dairy producer, has launched paper straws for its Chivita, Capri Sun, and Hollandia yoghurt products, aligning with the Lagos State Government’s initiative to curb single-use plastics.
The Lagos State Government’s policy, set to fully enforce a ban on single-use plastics like straws and thin plastic bags by January 2025, aims to tackle the environmental damage caused by plastic waste.
Lagos generates over 13,000 tons of waste daily, with single-use plastics contributing significantly to clogged waterways and health risks.
CHI Limited’s adoption of paper straws responds to this pressing need for eco-friendly alternatives.
“We’re excited to introduce paper straws across our Chivita, Capri Sun, and Hollandia ranges,” said Deepanjan Roy, Managing Director of CHI Limited. “This change reflects our commitment to sustainability and supporting the Lagos State Government’s vision for a cleaner environment.”
The company, a subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Company since 2019, has invested in enhancing its packaging to meet environmental standards while maintaining product quality.
According to a report by CHI Limited, the paper straws are designed to be recyclable and environmentally friendly, complementing the company’s existing six-layer aseptic packaging used for its beverages.
This packaging ensures product freshness while being recyclable, reinforcing CHI Limited’s focus on sustainable practices.
The move follows global trends, as seen in the European Union’s 2021 Single-Use Plastics Directive, which banned plastic straws and prompted companies like Capri Sun to adopt paper alternatives.
However, the shift to paper straws has sparked mixed reactions. Some consumers have expressed concerns about functionality, citing experiences in other markets where paper straws were less durable.
“We hope these paper straws hold up well for our kids who love Capri Sun,” said Lagos resident Aisha Bello.
Despite such concerns, CHI Limited has emphasized improvements in straw durability to ensure a seamless consumer experience.
The Lagos State Government is encouraging manufacturers to adopt materials like bamboo or biodegradable packaging and has proposed a Plastics Waste Management Fund to support waste management.
