Holland Dairy unveils new banana yoghurt in Ethiopia

Banana Yoghurt made with authentic Ethiopian bananas

ETHIOPIA –  Holland Dairy, a prominent Ethiopian dairy producer, has unveiled its latest creation, Banana Yoghurt made with authentic Ethiopian bananas.

The launch, announced earlier this week, marks a significant step in blending traditional flavors with modern dairy innovation, aiming to captivate consumers both locally and beyond.

According to a statement shared by Jean-Paul Rieu, the company’s managing director, the new product celebrates Ethiopia’s rich agricultural heritage.

We’re thrilled to bring this unique yoghurt to our customers,” Rieu said. “Using real Ethiopian bananas not only supports our farmers but also delivers a taste that’s truly special.”

The announcement, highlighted the meticulous process of sourcing ripe, high-quality bananas from smallholder farms in Ethiopia’s southern regions, known for their fertile soils and ideal growing conditions.

“The yoghurt is crafted to offer a creamy texture with a natural sweetness, free from artificial flavors, which aligns with growing consumer demand for healthier, authentic food options.”

A report by the Ethiopian Dairy Association noted that the country’s dairy sector has seen a 12% rise in demand for flavored yoghurts over the past year, driven by urban consumers seeking convenient yet nutritious snacks.

Holland’s Dairy’s latest offering is poised to tap into this trend, with an introductory price of US$1.20 per 500-gram tub, making it accessible to a wide audience.

Production has already scaled up, with the company collaborating with over 200 local banana farmers to ensure a steady supply.

This partnership, according to industry sources, has injected approximately US$50,000 into rural economies since the project began six months ago.

“It’s more than just yoghurt, it’s about uplifting our communities,” the company said.

The product is now available in major supermarkets across Ethiopia, with plans to expand distribution to neighboring Kenya and Uganda by next quarter.

Early feedback from consumers has been positive, with many praising the yoghurt’s fresh taste and smooth consistency.

The company also emphasized its commitment to sustainability, using eco-friendly packaging priced at an additional US$0.10 per unit to minimize environmental impact.

As Ethiopia’s dairy industry continues to grow, innovations like Rieu Dairy’s Banana Yoghurt signal a promising future.

The blend of local ingredients and global standards could set a new benchmark, encouraging other producers to explore the country’s vast agricultural potential.

For now, consumers are invited to savor a taste of Ethiopia, one spoonful at a time.
