Arla boosts dairy operations in Nigeria with new measures

The expansion includes the introduction of 216 Danish heifers in 2023

NIGERIA – Arla Foods, a leading global dairy company, has expanded its operations in Nigeria with new biosecurity measures, forage trials, and local processing initiatives at its Damau Dairy Farm in Kaduna State.

The Damau Dairy Farm, which opened in May 2023, sits on 400 hectares of land and is designed to be a modern hub for milk production.

According to Arla Foods, the farm aims to produce 1.6 million kilograms of milk in 2024, with plans to increase output to between 4 million and 5 million kilograms when operating at full capacity.

The expansion includes the introduction of 216 Danish heifers in 2023, a move that has already begun to transform the facility into one of Nigeria’s most advanced dairy operations.

A key focus of the expansion is biosecurity. Arla has implemented strict health and safety protocols to protect livestock from diseases, a critical measure in a region where outbreaks like foot-and-mouth disease have affected agriculture.

“We are committed to ensuring the highest standards for our animals,” said a spokesperson from Arla Foods. These efforts are expected to improve milk quality and reduce losses for farmers.

Forage trials are also underway to enhance cattle feed. The company is testing locally grown crops to create sustainable and cost-effective feed options.

This initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported materials and support Nigeria’s agricultural economy. These trials could lead to better nutrition for the herd, boosting milk yields over time.

Local processing is another cornerstone of Arla’s strategy. The company has invested in facilities to process milk on-site, cutting down transportation costs and ensuring fresher products for consumers.

This move is part of Arla’s broader goal to create jobs and build a self-sufficient dairy sector in Nigeria.

“Our vision is to empower local communities and meet growing demand,” said an Arla official during a recent farm tour.

The expansion has been praised by industry experts. Nigeria’s dairy sector has long faced challenges like low production and high import costs.

Arla’s efforts could help bridge this gap, offering a model for other companies. Local farmers in Kaduna have also welcomed the project, with many hoping to benefit from training and partnerships.

Arla Foods, known for brands like Dano Milk, continues to deepen its footprint in Nigeria. With these new measures, the company is not only boosting its operations but also contributing to the country’s food security and economic growth.
