Organic Valley welcomes first female CEO in historic leadership shift

Nelson’s journey with Organic Valley began almost 20 years ago when she joined as an intern.

USA – Organic Valley, a US based farmer-owned cooperative, has named Shawna Nelson as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to lead the organization in its 37-year history.

The announcement highlighted Nelson’s appointment effective March 28, 2025, following nearly two decades of service with the cooperative.

Nelson’s journey with Organic Valley began almost 20 years ago when she joined as an intern. Over the years, she climbed the ranks, contributing to the cooperative’s growth and success across various departments.

According to a report by Dairy Foods, her extensive experience and strategic leadership made her a standout choice to succeed Jeff Frank, who stepped down after serving as CEO since January 2023.

Frank, who came from a 25-year career at Hormel Foods, guided the cooperative through significant initiatives, including sustainability efforts and product innovation, before announcing his departure earlier this year.

Organic Valley, founded in 1988 by seven farmers in Wisconsin under the name Coulee Region Organic Produce Pool (CROPP), has grown into a powerhouse with over 1,800 farmer-owners across the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

The cooperative is renowned for its organic milk, cheese, butter, and meat products, distributed in all 50 states and exported to 25 countries.

Nelson’s appointment comes at a time of continued expansion, with the cooperative welcoming over 50 new family farms in the first four months of 2024 and planning to add more than 60 by year-end, as noted in a June 2024 Dairy Foods report.

“I am deeply honored to lead Organic Valley and build on its legacy of supporting organic farmers and sustainable practices,” Nelson said in a statement released by the cooperative.

Her vision includes strengthening the cooperative’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community advocacy, areas she has championed throughout her tenure.

Jeff Frank praised Nelson’s readiness for the role, saying, “Shawna’s dedication and understanding of our mission make her the perfect leader to take Organic Valley forward.”

His tenure saw innovations like the launch of organic oat creamers in January 2025 and a carbon insetting program that paid farmers for reducing emissions.

Nelson’s appointment has been met with enthusiasm from industry observers, who see it as a progressive step for the cooperative.

With her leadership, Organic Valley aims to continue its pioneering role in the organic food sector, balancing tradition with innovation to meet growing consumer demand.

As she steps into the CEO position, Nelson inherits a legacy of resilience and a platform to shape the future of organic farming.
