UK dairy exports soar to £1.8B amid strong EU, US demand

EU remains the largest market, absorbing a substantial portion of UK dairy goods

UK – The UK dairy industry is celebrating a significant milestone as exports reached £1.8 billion in 2024, driven by robust demand from the European Union and the United States.

According to industry experts, the surge in export value reflects growing international appetite for British dairy products, particularly cheese, which has hit record highs.

The EU remains the largest market, absorbing a substantial portion of UK dairy goods, while the US has emerged as a key player, boosting demand for premium offerings.

A report by Farmers Guide noted that this success comes even as the industry navigates a tough trading environment, with higher milk prices and improved farmer confidence playing a pivotal role.

“We’ve seen a real turnaround this year,” said Susie Stannard, senior dairy analyst at AHDB. “Farmers are responding to better market conditions, and it’s paying off with this export boom.”

The Northern Farmer also highlighted that cheese exports have been a standout performer, with British varieties gaining traction abroad.

This growth aligns with a forecasted 1.1% rise in UK milk production for 2025, signaling a potential for sustained success.

However, challenges remain, including competition from plant-based alternatives and policy shifts that could impact future trade.

Beyond exports, the dairy sector is making strides in sustainability. A report by South West Farmer revealed that over 50 UK dairy farms have joined a carbon reduction project, aiming to lower emissions and meet environmental goals.

Despite the positive outlook, not all news is rosy. The Telegraph reported that one British dairy farm closes daily, squeezed by rising costs and contract losses from big businesses.

Yet, investments like Co-op’s £1 million pledge to support its dairy farmers show efforts to bolster the industry’s backbone.

“The demand from the EU and US is a lifeline for us,” shared Tom Harrison, a dairy farmer from Yorkshire. “It’s tough out here, but this gives us hope to keep going.”

His words echo the sentiment of many in the sector, who see export growth as a critical buffer against domestic pressures.

As the UK dairy industry looks to 2025, the £1.8 billion export milestone stands as a testament to its adaptability and appeal on the global stage, even as it grapples with ongoing challenges at home.
