Hilmar Cheese Co. opens US$600M eco-friendly facility in Dodge City

Sustainability was a cornerstone of the facility’s design.

USA – Hilmar Cheese Co. Inc., a leading manufacturer of cheese and whey ingredients, has officially opened its new production facility in Dodge City, Kansas, according to a company release reported by the firm on March 24, 2025.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the launch of a US$600 million investment that brings nearly 250 jobs to the region and strengthens the company’s presence in the American cheese and protein market.

The new Dodge City plant specializes in producing American-style cheeses in 40-pound blocks, sold wholesale to customers for use in various food products.

It also manufactures a diverse range of whey proteins for global distribution. The facility joins Hilmar’s existing plants in Hilmar, California, and Dalhart, Texas, making it the company’s third manufacturing site.

Sustainability was a cornerstone of the facility’s design.

Advanced technology, including automated controls and efficient pumps, minimizes water use while maintaining high sanitation standards. Water is recycled for processing protein, cleaning equipment, and reclaiming heat.

Upgraded spray nozzles and reused rinse water further enhance cleaning efficiency. These efforts are expected to reduce the plant’s greenhouse gas intensity, supporting the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment to achieve a carbon-neutral dairy industry by 2050.

“We’ve built this facility with the future in mind,” said a Hilmar spokesperson during the opening event. “It’s about producing quality products while protecting our planet.”

The Dodge City plant’s operations align with Hilmar’s broader environmental goals.

A report by the company highlights how efficient equipment not only conserves water but also lowers energy consumption, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.

Local officials have praised the project for its economic and ecological benefits. “This facility brings jobs and innovation to Dodge City,” noted a city representative at the ceremony.

Based in Hilmar, California, the company has long been recognized for its role in the dairy industry.
