JESA Farm launches lactose-free milk in Uganda

UGANDA –  JESA Farm Dairy, a leading dairy producer in Uganda, has launched its latest product, JESA Lactose-Free Milk, aimed at bringing the nutritional benefits of milk to consumers who struggle with lactose intolerance.

The company described the product as creamy, delicious, and easy to digest, retaining all the nutritional benefits of regular milk, such as calcium and protein, without the lactose that causes issues for many.

The announcement, made on March 3, 2025, via social media, highlights the company’s commitment to innovation and meeting the diverse needs of its customers.

According to JESA Farm Dairy, this innovation aims to bring milk back into the diets of those who have had to give it up.

“Our goal is to provide a lactose-free option that doesn’t sacrifice flavor or nutrition,” said a company spokesperson. “We’re excited to see people enjoy milk again without worry.”

This product addresses a widespread need, particularly in East Africa, where lactose intolerance is prevalent.

According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, approximately 70% of adults in sub-Saharan Africa experience some degree of lactose intolerance due to reduced lactase enzyme production after childhood.

In Uganda, where milk consumption is culturally significant but often limited by this condition, JESA’s new offering could expand the market for dairy products significantly.

JESA Farm Dairy, part of the Mulwana Group, has a strong portfolio of products, including fresh pasteurized milk, UHT milk, yogurt, butter, cream, and the recently launched JESA Jus, a lactose-free dairy and fruit blend.

The company also introduced JESA Bonga, Uganda’s first ambient drinking yogurt, in 2024, showcasing its focus on innovative dairy solutions.

In 2022, Brookside also launched a lactose-free milk in a new half-liter pack in Kenya targeting similar consumer needs, reflecting a shared strategy within the Brookside family to cater to lactose-intolerant customers.

Beyond product launches, JESA has invested in expanding its production capacity from 75,000 to 200,000 liters per day, supported by financing from the Uganda Development Bank.

The company also upgraded its effluent treatment plant to meet environmental standards, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

Additionally, JESA supports community initiatives, such as donating milk to programs like Ekisakaate Kya Nnabagereka to promote child nutrition.

“We’re not just about products; we’re about improving lives,” said a JESA representative. With this launch, JESA reinforces its role as a leader in Uganda’s evolving dairy sector.
