FDA, CDC investigate multi-state Listeria outbreak linked to frozen shakes

USA – The US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating a multi-state outbreak of listeria infections traced to frozen supplemental shakes produced by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc.,.

The FDA confirmed that as of February 24, 2025, 38 cases have been reported across 21 states, with 37 hospitalizations and 12 deaths.

The frozen shakes, sold under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, have been recalled, according to the FDA.

The agency stated that these products were primarily distributed to hospitals and long-term care facilities across the country. Prairie Farms Dairy has yet to issue a statement in response to the outbreak.

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for listeriosis, can lead to severe illness, particularly in older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Infections often present with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and nausea. The CDC noted that symptoms can appear anywhere from the same day to 10 weeks after consuming contaminated food.

The FDA confirmed that an onsite inspection was conducted at Prairie Farms Dairy in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where both environmental and product samples were collected for testing.

“Three of the environmental swabs from the processing area tested positive for listeria monocytogenes,” the agency reported.

A public health official involved in the investigation said, “This outbreak is a serious concern, particularly given that the affected products were distributed in healthcare settings where vulnerable populations are at higher risk.”

Authorities are urging healthcare providers and facilities to check for and discard any recalled products to prevent further infections.

The FDA and CDC continue to monitor the outbreak as they work with state health departments and Prairie Farms Dairy to contain the spread.
