THAILAND – FrieslandCampina Ingredients has received approval for its milk fat globule membrane ingredient, Vivinal MFGM, for use in infant formulas and other food products in Thailand.
The company reported that Vivinal MFGM is a whey protein concentrate obtained through the gentle processing of unpasteurised cheese whey.
It contains proteins, lipids, and bioactive components such as phospholipids, immunoglobulin G, and lactoferrin.
A report by FrieslandCampina Ingredients highlighted clinical studies showing that MFGM supports cognitive development in infants and reduces the risk of middle ear infections.
According to the company, a recent in vitro study also found that whey-derived MFGM has antiviral effects against respiratory syncytial virus.
With the approval in Thailand, manufacturers in the country can now incorporate Vivinal MFGM into a wide range of infant and young child food applications.
Market data showed that Thailand’s infant formula market was valued at US$865 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5% through 2029.
The premiumisation of infant milk formula is also a growing trend, with reports indicating that 74% of new infant formula launches in 2024 contained at least one bioactive ingredient.
FrieslandCampina Ingredients noted that the approval aligns with this market trend, offering brands an opportunity to develop premium infant milk formulas with added health benefits.
“This achievement offers brands the exciting opportunity to create premium infant milk formulas for the growing Thai market, with all the added health benefits this premium ingredient with bioactive proteins offers,” Sophie Nicolas, marketing lead for APAC – Early Life Nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, stated.
In addition she noted that families deserve access to the highest-quality infant milk formula when breastfeeding is not possible.
“With this approval, we’re able to help brands provide more infants with the nutrients they need for a great start in life.”
