USA – The Environmental Defense Fund, Danone, and Bel Group have urged the European Commission to take decisive steps in addressing methane emissions from the dairy sector.
According to EDF, the call in a letter to European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen, emphasized the need to integrate methane reduction measures into the Commission’s upcoming Vision for Agriculture and Food.
EDF highlighted that the dairy sector is a significant contributor to methane emissions in the European Union, making it essential to implement targeted strategies for reduction.
The signatories argue that tackling methane emissions is not only an environmental necessity but also a step toward strengthening sustainability within the industry.
“The dairy sector must take responsibility for its emissions, and this requires urgent collaboration between policymakers and industry leaders,” stated an EDF representative.
The initiative reflects a broader shift within the agricultural sector toward climate-conscious practices.
According to reports, the European Commission is already exploring policies that support emission reductions in line with the EU’s climate goals.
The recommendations presented by EDF, Danone, and Bel Group could influence the Commission’s approach, potentially shaping future policies that balance environmental commitments with economic realities.
“Sustainability is at the core of our business, and reducing methane emissions is a crucial part of building a resilient food system,” a spokesperson from Danone remarked.
As discussions around the EU’s agricultural policies continue, the push from these major industry players could set the stage for more structured and effective methane reduction strategies in the dairy sector.
