Bühler launches Stellar Technology to accelerate cell growth in food production

SWITZERLAND – Bühler has unveiled its latest innovation, Stellar technology, designed to accelerate cell growth in biological systems and improve efficiency in food production processes.

This development represents a huge step in combining research with industrial applications, addressing challenges in the food production industry.

Developed in partnership with academic institutions, Stellar technology focuses on enhancing the speed and reliability of cell-based processes.

According to Bühler, the system improves efficiency by creating optimal conditions for cells to grow, resulting in shorter production times and reduced contamination risks.

Dr. Leandro Buchmann, Bühler’s Head of Bioprocessing since 2022, likened the process to giving cells a boost, saying, “It’s like drinking coffee in the morning. Stimulating cells in a specific manner makes the entire process more efficient and delivers faster results.”

The concept behind Stellar technology originated seven years ago when Buchmann, then studying food science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, explored ways to make microalgae production more cost-effective.

His work was inspired by a study conducted by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which demonstrated that electrical pulses could accelerate the growth of leaves.

This idea became the foundation for developing Stellar, which has now evolved into a scalable industrial solution.

By optimizing cell growth, Stellar aims to address critical concerns in food production, including reducing production timelines and minimizing safety risks.

Bühler emphasized that this technology offers potential commercial benefits for manufacturers while contributing to sustainable food systems.

The company, known for over a century of technological advancements, sees collaboration as a driving force behind its innovations.

Bühler stated that Stellar is the result of years of cooperative efforts with academic and industry partners, highlighting the importance of bridging research and industrial practices.
