Uganda launches US$3.5B livestock project to boost Tisai Island’s economy

UGANDA – The Ugandan government has launched a dairy and beef project on Tisai Island, Kumi District, under a US$3.5 billion initiative aimed at fostering economic empowerment through livestock farming.

Reported by government officials, the project is funded by the Islamic Development Bank and operates within the framework of the Uganda Climate Smart Initiative.

This initiative seeks to harness the island’s potential for livestock production, marking a transformative step for the local economy.

Tisai Island, recently designated as a sub-county, has historically faced challenges in accessing social services. However, the construction of a road linking the island to the mainland in Kumi District has spurred renewed government interest in its development.

Reported by local authorities, the island’s extensive land and fertile vegetation offer an ideal environment for livestock farming, which the dairy and beef project aims to utilize effectively.

The Uganda Climate Smart Initiative, co-funded by the World Bank and the Ugandan government, underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.

According to officials overseeing the program, Kumi is among seven districts in the Teso Sub-region selected for the initial rollout, which began in March.

The project will provide islanders with improved livestock breeds tailored for both dairy and beef production.

Dr. Margaret Aanyu, a key figure in the initiative, reported that additional agricultural and economic development projects are planned for the region.

These include fish farming, apiary projects, and the establishment of mango and orange value chains. The integrated approach aims to diversify income sources and boost food security for the island’s residents.

In addition, by introducing improved livestock breeds and fostering sustainable agricultural practices, the government seeks to ensure long-term economic and environmental benefits for Tisai Island and the surrounding regions.
