South Korea’s growing appetite for cheese fuels surge in imports

SOUTH KOREA – South Korea’s demand for imported cheese has grown significantly, with a 5% compound annual growth rate reported over the past five years, according to a market brief by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.

Limited domestic production has led the country to rely heavily on imports, with the United States holding a dominant 34% market share as of 2023.

Other prominent suppliers include New Zealand, Germany, and Denmark. These imports cater to a rising demand for a variety of cheese types such as mozzarella, cheddar, cream cheese, and processed cheese.

The increasing appeal of cheese in South Korea is closely tied to shifting consumer priorities toward health and wellness.

Reported by the USDA, the popularity of cottage cheese has surged among fitness enthusiasts, owing to its high protein and probiotic content, which aids digestion, boosts immunity, and supports weight management.

Parmesan and mozzarella have similarly gained recognition for their potential to reduce risks of heart disease and stroke, contributing to their integration into health-conscious diets.

In addition to health benefits, cheese has become a key feature of South Korea’s evolving drinking culture. Traditionally centered on Korean dishes, drinking snacks, or anju, now frequently include cheese.

Its compatibility with alcoholic beverages, particularly imported wines and spirits, has made it a favorite addition, alongside Western pairings such as salami. This trend has reportedly elevated the home dining experience, bringing a touch of sophistication to social gatherings.

The integration of Western cuisine into South Korea’s food service market has further bolstered cheese consumption. Burgers, pizzas, and pastas have gained widespread popularity, fostering opportunities for innovative fusion dishes.

Traditional Korean staples like tteokbokki and kimchi fried rice are increasingly topped with melted cheese, creating a unique balance of spicy and creamy flavors.

As South Korea embraces global food trends, cheese has cemented its place as a versatile and essential ingredient in Korean households.

Whether driven by health considerations, convenience, or culinary exploration, the growing demand for cheese highlights its evolving role in the country’s dynamic food culture.

Industry reports suggest that this upward trend in cheese imports and consumption is unlikely to wane, reflecting a deeper integration of dairy products into the nation’s lifestyle and cuisine.
