KENYA – Dairy farming in Kenyan Nyandarua County is witnessing a technological revolution as farmers turn to high-tech solutions to enhance their practices and increase productivity.
Through a subsidized Artificial Insemination (AI) service introduced by the county government, dairy farmers are leveraging mobile apps to streamline their operations and achieve higher yields.
The Digycow mobile app, an integral part of the subsidized AI package, has proven to be a game-changer for dairy farmers in the region.
It eliminates the need for manual record-keeping, delivers timely updates via mobile phones, and allows absentee farmers to remotely monitor their dairy cows.
Simon Ndonga, a dairy farmer from Wanjura Village, shared his experience with the technology, emphasizing its role in tracking the progress of cows, from pregnancy stages to milking routines.
“For decades, I struggled with unreliable employees and management challenges in dairy farming. The introduction of the Digycow mobile app has transformed my operations,” Ndonga stated.
Rosemary Wamae from Ndaragwa highlighted the precision and efficiency brought by the mobile app in managing AI services.
She noted how the technology ensures timely inseminations, monitors the health of cows during pregnancy, and integrates newborn calves into the system seamlessly.
The Nyandarua County Livestock Development Director, Dr. Edward Kanyari, acknowledged the positive response from farmers towards the subsidized AI services and the accompanying technology.
The program, which aims to enhance livestock management practices, has significantly reduced the cost of AI services from Sh2,000 to Sh400 per service.
Additionally, the county has deployed veterinary and livestock development officers to provide field support to farmers.
Addressing the challenges faced in AI services, Governor Kiarie Badilisha emphasized the need for innovative solutions to overcome funding delays that often hinder development programs.
With the adoption of high-tech solutions, including mobile apps and AI services, dairy farmers in Nyandarua County are poised to achieve higher milk production targets in the coming years.
