DSM-Firmenich enhances sustell to bolster dairy industry sustainability

NETHERLANDS – DSM-Firmenich has introduced significant upgrades to its Sustell platform, further strengthening its ability to assist dairy producers in optimizing environmental sustainability.

According to the company, the farm-to-fork life cycle analysis (LCA) software now enables dairy producers to model the impact of various sustainability interventions.

This provides critical tools for reducing environmental footprints while aligning operations with global sustainability targets.

The agri-food industry has experienced a transformative push towards sustainability, driven by evolving consumer demands for transparency, regulatory pressures, and voluntary corporate commitments like the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

As reported by DSM-Firmenich, the complexity and cost of conducting life cycle assessments have been substantial hurdles for many producers, but tools like Sustell aim to democratize access to such analyses.

“There is an enormous need for the dairy industry to train, hire, and retain people skilled in life cycle assessment, which is critical for meeting sustainability reporting requirements,” David Morris, Global LCA Director at DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said.

“This is precisely why we created Sustell – to make LCA accessible to all players, big and small, across the value chain.”

Since its 2021 launch, Sustell has positioned itself as one of the most comprehensive platforms on the market, analyzing 19 environmental impact categories across livestock production.

The platform’s reach extends beyond dairy to sectors such as poultry, pigs, and aquaculture, underscoring its versatility for both pasture-based and indoor production systems.

The latest upgrades to Sustell’s dairy module offer producers a dual benefit: an in-depth understanding of their current climate footprint and the ability to simulate the effects of sustainability interventions.

This approach allows dairy businesses to make more data-driven decisions while unlocking opportunities for value creation, including access to sustainable finance.

Morris emphasized that the platform provides granular insights into each stage of dairy production, from calf development to mature lactating phases.

By capturing the entire life cycle of dairy operations, Sustell helps farmers pinpoint areas contributing most to their environmental footprint and prioritize targeted efficiency improvements.

“Through advanced data analytics, dairy producers gain transparent, scientifically verifiable performance metrics that not only measure impact but also inform reduction strategies,” he noted.

The enhancements align with key global standards, including the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and International Dairy Federation (IDF) guidelines.

DSM-Firmenich has also integrated the GFLI and Agri-Footprint 6.3 feed ingredient databases, ensuring comprehensive coverage of critical inputs such as silage and roughages.

According to Morris, businesses across the dairy value chain increasingly seek actionable, tailored insights to address the complexities of their operations.

The platform’s ability to adapt to unique farm ecosystems and life stages positions it as a valuable solution for aligning sustainability objectives with operational realities.

Sustell’s enhanced capabilities reflect an industry-wide shift toward integrated, data-driven tools that enable environmental accountability across supply chains.

By fostering connectivity through API integrations and strategic partnerships, the platform links various stakeholders – from farms to processors, retailers, and eco-labeling systems – offering a clear and credible environmental footprint.

“Going forward, we will add further connectivity so that entire value chains can connect, share, manage, and report their environmental footprints, ultimately accelerating the transition to more sustainable food systems,” Morris concluded.

The advancements come at a time when farm-level environmental data platforms face increasing competition, reflecting broader market trends toward sustainability-focused solutions.
