Mobile app transforms dairy farming in Nyandarua County

KENYA – Kenya’s dairy sector is experiencing a remarkable transformation in Nyandarua County, where a mobile application has emerged as a game-changer for farmers.

The innovative platform, known as Digicow, has addressed long-standing challenges faced by livestock farmers by delivering real-time solutions that bridge the gap caused by geographical constraints and lack of timely information.

Digicow, introduced earlier this year, empowers farmers by offering instant updates on critical aspects of livestock management.

Dairy farmers, including those managing their herds remotely, can now monitor pregnancy cycles, feeding routines, milking schedules, and delivery timelines through their mobile devices.

According to Mr. Simon Ndonga, a dairy farmer from Wanjura Village in Ol Kalou, the app has significantly improved livestock management by providing accurate and reliable animal husbandry insights.

Not only does the app provide access to information, but it also fosters a community of farmers who can exchange ideas and receive guidance from experts in the field,” he said.

A key benefit reported by farmers has been the ability to eliminate repeat artificial insemination (AI) services, which have historically been a costly burden.

By effectively tracking reproductive cycles, the app enables farmers to minimize unnecessary expenses and optimize herd productivity.

The success of Digicow has also been bolstered by the Nyandarua County government’s efforts to subsidize AI services and partner with cooperative societies to support the dairy sector.

Dr. Edward Kanyari, the County Livestock Development Director, highlighted the tangible results achieved so far.

“Milk production per cow has risen from an average of three kilos to 15 kilos. Our target is to reach 30 kilos per cow per day within the next three years,” he noted, attributing this growth to improved herd management facilitated by the app and the subsidized services.

Governor Kiarie Badilisha applauded the rising number of farmers adopting the technology and the subsidized AI services.

However, he acknowledged existing hurdles, particularly the delayed release of funds by the National Treasury, which has hampered the implementation of key development programs.

The governor stressed the importance of innovative approaches to ensure a steady supply of quality semen and uninterrupted access to essential resources for farmers.

The integration of technology into dairy farming has enabled the county government to closely monitor industry progress, providing timely interventions and tailored support where necessary.

This synergy between technological solutions and government-backed programs has not only empowered farmers but has also stimulated local economic growth.

The adoption of such innovative tools is a critical step in creating a sustainable and resilient dairy sector.
