BELGIUM – Belgium’s dairy sector has taken a significant step forward with the merger of Vache Bleue Group and Flanders Food Production (FFP), forming a new entity named European Dairy Company.
According to the companies, the merger creates a “major European player in the dairy sector” with a combined annual turnover of approximately €500 million (US$526.2 million).
Vache Bleue Group, based in Lillois and founded in 1927, is widely recognized for brands such as Vache Bleue, Dilea Zero Lactose, and Valmartin, which primarily serve Belgium and the French market.
The company also maintains a presence in Germany, where it produces cheese and supplies private-label products.
Lommel-based FFP, established in 2003, specializes in cutting, grating, and portioning cheese while maintaining a strong foothold in private-label production.
The merger marks a strategic move for both businesses, leveraging their combined strengths to optimize operations and accelerate growth.
As reported by the companies, European Dairy Company will continue operating from its existing facilities in Belgium, France, and Germany. Employees and management teams from both sides will remain in place, ensuring continuity during the transition.
Free Vroome, CEO of Vache Bleue Group, emphasized the advantages of the partnership, noting that it strengthens their market position while preserving their Belgian heritage.
“By joining forces, we have obtained a strong position in the dairy market. This gives Vache Bleue Group access to FFP’s expertise and technology,” Vroome said in a statement.
“We [will] exploit synergies, optimise investments, and build a better position in all markets without losing sight of our Belgian roots,”
Axel Van de Poel, CEO of FFP, highlighted the benefits for customers and the company’s capacity to meet evolving demands.
“The investment power of our new group enables us to deliver what customers expect: strong products, fast deliveries, and high quality, supported by modern technology,” Van de Poel remarked.
“FFP can now rely on its own cheese production in Germany and tap into new markets with Vache Bleue Group products. By pooling our expertise and focusing on growth, market expansion, and innovation, we offer our teams the best opportunities to continue to grow together,”
According to company representatives, plans are already in place to expand production capacities across their various sites.
