Nestlé USA appoints Martin Thompson as CEO

USA – Nestlé USA has announced the promotion of Martin Thompson to chief executive officer and U.S. market head, effective January 1, 2025.

Thompson, a seasoned executive within the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, will report to Steve Presley, CEO of Nestlé Zone Americas.

Thompson’s tenure at Nestlé began in 2018 when the company acquired Starbucks’ consumer packaged goods and foodservice products business.

By 2020, he was appointed president of Nestlé Coffee Partners, where he oversaw U.S. coffee brands, including Nescafé, Starbucks at Home, and Seattle’s Best.

Under his leadership, the coffee division became a cornerstone of growth for Nestlé USA, delivering consistent profitability and gaining market share.

Presley praised Thompson’s achievements, stating, “For the last several years, Marty has led one of our most successful businesses, cementing our position as undisputed leaders in the coffee category.”

“He was instrumental in doubling our Starbucks business globally in just four years and leading the expansion of Nescafé in the U.S. market.”

Presley further highlighted Thompson’s consumer-first approach, noting his ability to drive innovation and inspire teams to deliver results.

Thompson’s promotion comes at a critical time for Nestlé, as the company works to address weakened consumer demand, particularly in North America, which represents over a quarter of its sales.

According to Nestlé’s most recent financial report, organic growth in the region declined 0.3% for the first nine months of 2024, totaling US$21.4 billion.

Amid inflationary pressures, cost-cutting measures, and changing consumer preferences, Thompson’s leadership will be pivotal to stabilizing and growing the U.S. market.

In recent months, Nestlé has initiated major organizational changes to enhance efficiency and adaptability.

These changes include the separation of its waters and premium beverages division into a standalone business and an ambitious plan to cut US$2.8 billion in costs by 2027.

As reported by company sources, Thompson’s proven ability to grow key product categories will play a significant role in steering the U.S. market toward recovery and long-term profitability.

Before joining Nestlé, Thompson served as CEO of Ghirardelli Chocolate Company for six years and held leadership roles at The Clorox Company and Procter & Gamble.

With over 35 years of experience in the CPG sector, Thompson brings a wealth of expertise in sales, marketing, and general management.

His success in driving the coffee division has underscored his ability to adapt to evolving market dynamics while maintaining a strong consumer focus.

Presley, who currently oversees Nestlé’s U.S. and North American operations, will expand his role to include Latin America, prompting the need for dedicated leadership in the U.S.

Thompson’s appointment is expected to reinforce Nestlé’s presence in the region and strengthen its competitive position amid a challenging economic environment.

As food and beverage companies respond to shifting consumer habits, Thompson’s familiarity with the U.S. market and his track record of fostering growth will likely prove instrumental.

Presley expressed confidence in Thompson’s ability to replicate his success, stating, “He builds and inspires teams that deliver, and I expect he will inspire the same innovation and growth mindset as he takes on this broader CEO role.”
