Lactalis Canada opens ESG-focused distribution facility to enhance supply chain efficiency

CANADA – Lactalis Canada Inc., a division of the global dairy giant Lactalis Group, has officially opened its largest Canadian distribution center in Oshawa, Ontario, marking a major milestone for the company’s supply chain network and sustainability goals.

The 379,000-square-foot facility is designed to support Lactalis Canada’s cheese and table spreads business while aligning with the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) agenda.

The state-of-the-art facility, capable of storing up to 60,000 pallets in cold and freezer environments, enhances the capacity and efficiency of Lactalis Canada’s distribution operations.

According to Mark Taylor, president and chief executive officer of Lactalis Canada, the facility underscores the company’s leadership in the Canadian dairy industry and commitment to long-term growth.

“This facility ensures we meet the evolving needs of our business and valued customers, while its sustainable design will revolutionize our network’s efficiency and ESG agenda,” Taylor said.

The distribution center integrates several sustainability-focused features to reduce its environmental footprint.

As reported by Lactalis Canada, the facility is zero-carbon ready and relies solely on energy from Ontario’s provincial power grid, avoiding additional use of non-renewable energy sources.

Other notable features include energy-efficient lighting and equipment, high-grade insulation to reduce refrigeration power demands, and full reclamation of heat generated by the refrigeration systems for office spaces and the truck apron.

Additionally, the facility’s white roof mitigates heat island effects, while future plans include installing solar panels to provide renewable energy.

This step is expected to further reduce dependence on external power sources, contributing to Lactalis Canada’s ESG commitments.

The facility will employ approximately 80 workers, positioning Lactalis Canada as a key employer in Oshawa.

Taylor emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting the local community by creating opportunities for employment, skill development, and career growth.

“We look forward to being a key employer in the region and are committed to creating opportunities for employment, skill development, and career growth to contribute to the strong community of Oshawa,” he said.

Lactalis Canada operates 20 manufacturing facilities across the country and produces a wide range of dairy products under well-known brands, including Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond, Balderson, Astro, and Lactantia.

The launch of the Oshawa facility signals the company’s strategic focus on strengthening its Canadian operations and delivering high-quality products efficiently while prioritizing sustainable practices.
