FrieslandCampina WAMCO launches zero-waste initiative in Nigeria

NIGERIA – FrieslandCampina WAMCO has introduced the Zero-Waste Initiative, aimed at advancing sustainable practices in Nigeria’s dairy industry.

The initiative, which was unveiled during the 2024 Global Sustainability Week in Lagos, adopts a two-phase approach to tackle waste management challenges while fostering a circular economy.

The first phase focuses on reducing post-production waste sent to landfills, while the second phase targets the recovery of post-consumer waste.

This strategy aligns with the company’s goal of achieving zero waste to landfill by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.

Speaking at the launch, Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos State, represented by Mosopefolu George, commissioner of Economic Planning and Budget, acknowledged the importance of FrieslandCampina WAMCO’s efforts in aligning with the state’s sustainability objectives.

“Today’s launch reflects our collective commitment to create a cleaner and healthier Lagos. By reducing waste and promoting recycling, FrieslandCampina is supporting Lagos State’s waste management goals and setting an example in the food and beverage industry.”

FrieslandCampina WAMCO’s managing director, Roger Adou, described the initiative as part of the company’s commitment to environmental preservation alongside delivering high-quality dairy products to Nigerians.

“The Zero-Waste Initiative is a testament to our dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. By implementing eco-friendly processes, we aim to ensure our operations are in harmony with the planet,” Adou explained.

The Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) also supported the launch.

Jirinsola Olaleye, deputy director of Circular Economy, who represented the agency’s managing director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted LAWMA’s existing initiatives, such as Adopt a Street and formalizing informal waste collectors, to address waste challenges.

Olaleye commended FrieslandCampina WAMCO for donating uniforms for street sweepers, reinforcing the company’s commitment to supporting the state’s waste management strategies.

Executive Director Oreoluwa Famurewa emphasized the broader implications of the initiative, stating, “FrieslandCampina recognizes the urgency of addressing environmental challenges.”

“This proactive step aims to promote sustainability not just within the company’s operations but across Lagos and Nigeria as a whole. We are grateful for the partnership with the Lagos State Government, which plays a critical role in achieving a circular economy.”

FrieslandCampina WAMCO’s Zero-Waste Initiative introduces a comprehensive approach to waste reduction, emphasizing the importance of responsible production practices, resource conservation, and community partnerships.
