KENYA – Bio Foods has proudly launched its third Sustainability Report, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) excellence.
The launch event, which was attended by key government officials and industry leaders, highlighted Bio Foods’ accomplishments and set the course for the future of its sustainability efforts.
The company’s sustainability strategy focuses on seven key areas for the next five years, aligning with both national and global goals.
Notable achievements include obtaining B Corp certification, a globally recognized standard for ESG performance, and making significant progress in reducing environmental impact.
Bio Foods has achieved a 30% reduction in factory waste, a 28% reduction in water usage per kilogram of product, and a 6.4% reduction in carbon emissions intensity while increasing production by 20%.
In a significant shift towards renewable energy, Bio Foods has also transitioned 39% of its energy reliance to solar power. CEO Joachim Westerveld emphasized the company’s commitment to energy efficiency, with efforts including production schedules that align with solar energy availability and upgrading 92% of its facilities to LED lighting. These initiatives reflect Bio Foods’ dedication to minimizing energy waste and reducing its environmental footprint.
Furthermore, Bio Foods has introduced a new bonus system to encourage the production of high-quality milk.
Farmers supplying milk with low Total Plate Count (TPC) values are rewarded with additional payments, and further bonuses are given for higher butterfat and protein content, ensuring that Bio Foods’ products meet the highest standards of quality.
Bio Foods’ sustainability report also highlighted the company’s progress in packaging innovation, with plans to replace shrink wraps with crates for transportation and explore the use of recycled PET bottles for milk packaging.
This initiative is aligned with the Kenya Plastics Pact Design Guidelines for recyclability, enhancing both sustainability and product quality.
The event also featured a dairy summit hosted by Bio Foods and Lato Milk at Rawhide Farm in Nakuru County.
The summit focused on the implementation of the Quality Based Milk Payment System, in line with Kenya Dairy Board regulations to ensure quality and safety in milk production.
This initiative aims to provide farmers with increased income by ensuring that dairy products meet global market standards.
