With fortified dairy products gaining popularity, they are now at the forefront of the battle against malnutrition and are paving the way for a healthier, happier future for all.

The demand for the fortified dairy is largely fueled by the need to address nutritional gaps and improve health outcomes, especially among vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Leading brands innovate with probiotics, Omega-3s, and bioactive ingredients

In recent years, Africa has witnessed advancements in fortification techniques, such as the inclusion of vitamins (like vitamin D) and minerals (like calcium and iron) in dairy products. These efforts are crucial in combating malnutrition and supporting the wellness of the population.

For instance, the introduction of micronutrient-fortified dairy products has been particularly successful in countries like South Africa, where consumer demand for functional food is growing.

In addition to traditional fortification with essential vitamins, newer trends include the use of probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, and bioactive ingredients like lactoferrin, which contribute to immune system health

Nestlé South Africa has been a prominent player in fortifying dairy products with essential nutrients such as vitamin D and calcium, aiming to combat deficiencies prevalent in the region. A prime example is Nestlé Nido, a milk powder enriched with vitamins and minerals to promote growth and boost immunity in children.

By targeting malnutrition, Nido plays a vital role in supporting the health and wellness of young populations across various African countries.

Danone, a global dairy leader, has also introduced innovative dairy products to meet the nutritional needs of African consumers.

Their DanUp probiotic yogurt drink, available in several African markets including South Africa, is fortified with beneficial bacteria known to improve gut health and strengthen the immune system.
