Arla Foods hosts open day in Kaduna, showcasing sustainable dairy practices

NIGERIA – Arla Foods recently hosted its inaugural open day at the Arla Farm in Damau, Kaduna State, showcasing innovative dairy production facilities and sustainable farming practices. 

The event brought together government officials, local dairy farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and veterinary students, providing them with a firsthand look at Arla’s cutting-edge operations since the farm’s inauguration in May 2023.

During the open day, attendees enjoyed exclusive tours of the farm, observing advanced practices in cow welfare, feed management, and milking technology aimed at ensuring high-quality milk production. 

The event also featured exhibition stands from around 20 local and international partners, demonstrating a variety of dairy farming products and services. 

This initiative aligns with Arla’s commitment to enhance the local dairy community’s capabilities and support economic growth through collaboration with local farmers​

Mr. Snorri Sigurdsson, Senior Manager for Raw Milk Production, emphasized the importance of bridging theoretical knowledge with practical applications for veterinary students, aiming to inspire the next generation of professionals in sustainable dairy farming. 

The open day also underscored the significance of public-private partnerships in fostering sustainable growth within Nigeria’s dairy sector. 

Arla has been working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Kaduna State Government to support local initiatives such as the Damau Household Project, which empowers local households through dairy farming​

Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, noted that the Arla Farm is pivotal in strengthening the local dairy sector, enhancing community empowerment, and contributing to the state’s economy. 

Elele Ogunsanya, Senior Corporate Affairs and Communications Manager at Arla, remarked on the collaborative vision for a sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector, highlighting the company’s commitment to boosting local production and sharing knowledge​

Arla’s ongoing initiatives under the Partnership for Green and Productive Dairy (PGPD) project reflect its dedication to integrating advanced technology and green practices in dairy farming. 

These efforts aim to enhance local production capabilities and create a sustainable environment for dairy farmers in Nigeria, ultimately contributing to the country’s food security​
