KENYA – Lato Milk has officially launched Lato Nonna, an infant nutrition product, in Kenya, marking its second market entry in East Africa.
The launch comes at a time when the company has enforced strategies to enhance family health and nutrition by providing high-quality, locally-produced infant nutrition products tailored to meet the specific needs of the region’s families.
The East African region, with approximately 10,000 babies born daily in Uganda and Kenya alone, presents a growing demand for trusted, accessible infant nutrition.
“Lato Nonna stands as the first locally-originated East African brand in the infant nutrition sector, offering tailored nutrition products designed to support each stage of early childhood,” the company said.
The product line includes three distinct stages to meet the evolving needs of children from birth to three years.
Stage 1, for ages 0-6 months, ensures foundational nourishment; Stage 2, for ages 6-12 months, addresses growing infant needs; and Stage 3, for ages 1-3 years, supports the developmental milestones of toddlers.
In launching Lato Nonna, the company recognized the broader nutritional challenges and progress in the Eastern Africa subregion.
While there has been modest advancement toward global nutrition targets, pressing issues remain. Anaemia affects 31.9% of women of reproductive age, and 13.4% of infants experience low birth weight.
Exclusive breastfeeding prevalence in the region averages 59.2%, well above the global average of 43.8%, yet malnutrition persists.
The average prevalence of overweight among children under 5 is 4.0%, but stunting remains a critical concern, with a 32.6% prevalence rate that is significantly higher than the global average of 22.0%.
The adult population also faces nutritional challenges, with 7.0% of men and 6.5% of women living with diabetes.
Obesity rates also stand as a concern, affecting 12.1% of women and 3.5% of men.
