SOUTH AFRICA – Fair Cape Dairies has strengthened its commitment to combating hunger and reducing food waste through an exclusive partnership with SA Harvest, a food rescue organization.
The collaboration will focus on donating short-dated products, aligning with Fair Cape’s sustainability pillars, which emphasize animal welfare, social welfare, and environmental stewardship.
The partnership, announced during the 2024 World Food Day celebration in Dunoon, near Fair Cape’s factory, emphasizes the importance of sustainable food systems.
The event featured 120 children from three Early Childhood Development centers supported by SA Harvest as SA Harvest celebrated its fifth anniversary.
Since its inception, SA Harvest has delivered 76 million meals and rescued 19 million kilograms of food.
Fair Cape’s sustainability strategy prioritizes sustainable agriculture, conserving natural resources, and minimizing its carbon footprint.
By working with SA Harvest, Fair Cape ensured that its high-quality dairy products are distributed to vulnerable communities across Cape Town, particularly benefiting children in need.
This effort prevents food waste and provides essential nutrients such as protein, calcium, and healthy fats to undernourished populations.
Both Fair Cape and SA Harvest share a commitment to transparency, accountability, and equitable food distribution to vetted organizations, ensuring that rescued food reaches those who need it most.
“This partnership helps protect the environment while improving the lives of individuals facing food insecurity.”
Daniel Serman, trustee of the Fair Cape Cares Foundation, highlighted the alignment of the partnership with the company’s value.:
“Fair Cape’s core value is To Do the Right Thing. We are deeply committed to our pillars of sustainability, and through our partnership with SA Harvest, we are proud to ensure that our nutritious dairy products not only avoid waste, but also support the wellbeing of communities in need.”
In addition, Ozzy Nel, COO of SA Harvest, highlighted that the collaboration with Fair Cape Dairies is a testament to the power of collective action in addressing food waste and hunger.
“We are thrilled that Fair Cape has chosen SA Harvest as their exclusive beneficiary for short-dated products, ensuring that their high-quality dairy products reach the people who need them most while contributing to environmental sustainability.”
Since the partnership began in 2021, Fair Cape’s contributions have grown significantly.
Starting with just over 3,000 kilograms of donated products, this figure increased to more than 9,000 kilograms in 2022.
By 2024, the partnership had resulted in over 26,000 kilograms of nutritious dairy products and treats being donated to SA Harvest’s beneficiary organizations, which serve children and food-vulnerable communities.
