Danone Egypt launches new initiative to improve milk collection with advanced cooling

EGYPT – Danone Egypt, a subsidiary of Danone, has introduced the “Gawda” project, seeking to improve the quality of milk collection through advanced cooling technology.

According to the company, the initiative is the first of its kind in Egypt and is being implemented in the Beni Suef and Gharbia governorates under Danone’s ‘Alban Baladna’ framework.

The project seeks to maintain milk’s quality and nutritional value by keeping it at a cool temperature during collection, addressing the issue of milk exposure to high temperatures, which can lead to bacterial growth and contamination.

“By ensuring milk safety from the moment it is collected, we aim to deliver nutritious dairy products to consumers,” the company said,

The project is also part of the company’s broader sustainability efforts, contributing to its “Zero Food Waste” initiative.”

Hesham Radwan, General Manager of Danone Egypt, explained that the initiative’s  primary goal is to deliver healthy, nutritious products to consumers, which aligns with the company’s mission of ‘Bringing health through food to as many people as possible.’

“The Gawda project is a significant step in ensuring the safe transportation of milk, resulting in high-quality dairy products,” he noted.

In addition, he highlighted that the initiative is also part of Danone’s sustainable development strategy, “Danone Impact Journey,” and aims to reduce contamination risks by 90%, further securing milk’s nutritional value.

Ahmed Talaat, Corporate Affairs, Legal & Regulatory Director at Danone Egypt, highlighted the project’s role in reducing food waste and strengthening the company’s leadership in dairy processing.

Meanwhile, Danone Egypt operates a factory in Obour City, which spans 40,000 square meters and boasts eight production lines with an annual capacity of 120,000 tons of dairy products.

The factory’s output serves both the local market and export destinations like Libya, Mauritius, and Kenya, with exports growing by 112% in 2023.

Established in 2006,  Danone Egypt has remained a leading player in the essential dairy category and the first company in Egypt to receive B Corp certification, which recognizes its commitment to social and environmental performance.

The initiative follows a co-vestment between Danone and global food companies to support women dairy smallholders by launching the Advancing Women for Resilient Agricultural Supply Chains (AWRAS) initiative.

With a US$50 million co-investment, the initiative seeks to drive economic gains for women and communities in Africa, incentivize gender-responsive practices in the private sector, and influence policy for long-lasting systemic change.
