INDIA – India, one of the world’s largest milk producer, is set to witness transformation in its dairy sector over the next decade, driven by health-focused innovations and advanced technologies, Shah notes.
According to Akshali Shah, Executive Director of Parag Milk Foods, the dairy industry is expecting a rapid evolution as consumer preferences shift and product innovation accelerates.
In an interview, Shah emphasized the pivotal role played by India’s dairy sector in both the economy and rural livelihoods.
“The ‘White Revolution’ laid the foundation for the dairy industry’s early expansion, and government initiatives have continued to support its growth,” she said.
“These initiatives have bolstered dairy infrastructure, promoted better animal husbandry practices, and improved efficiency through technological advancements.”
Technological advancements driving India’s dairy industry
Shah highlighted that automated milking systems, precision farming tools, and data-driven herd management are increasingly helping farmers optimize milk yields and reduce labor costs, improving both productivity and animal welfare.
“These technologies allow for personalized care of livestock, ensuring healthier cows and better-quality milk,” Shah added.
India’s milk production has been on the rise, fueled by factors such as population growth, rising disposable incomes, and shifting consumer habits.
The increasing trend toward nuclear families and heightened awareness of food sourcing has further driven the demand for milk and dairy products.
This demand, combined with improved cold storage and transportation networks, has enabled the country to solidify its place as a global leader in the dairy sector.
India’s dairy future rooted in sustainability
However, the future of India’s dairy industry is not only about quantity but also about quality and sustainability.
Shah noted that sustainable farming practices, such as using biogas digesters to reduce methane emissions and implementing efficient water conservation methods, are shaping the future of dairy farming.
“There’s a growing shift towards regenerative practices, aimed at improving soil health and biodiversity. Sustainable supply chain management to reduce the carbon footprint is also gaining momentum,” she said.
Consumers’ increasing focus on health and wellness is expected to drive demand for functional dairy products like fortified milk and flavored ghee.
Shah anticipates a surge in premium milk products, as more consumers seek natural, fresh, and additive-free options.
“Transparency in milking, feeding, and processing will become a key differentiator for dairy brands. Single-origin milk, which emphasizes purity and farm-to-table freshness, is poised to gain traction.”
Parag Milk Foods, with its four prominent brands—Gowardhan, Go, Pride of Cows, and Avvatar—is at the forefront of this transformation.
The company has diversified beyond traditional dairy products, investing in value-added categories like cheese and whey protein.
“We cater to a wide range of consumer preferences and have a 22% market share in the cow ghee category. With products like Pride of Cows, we focus on premiumization by offering farm-to-table freshness and transparency,“ the Executive Director noted.
Meanwhile, Parag Milk Foods has expanded its distribution channels, leveraging e-commerce platforms and modern retail formats to reach urban consumers while also strengthening its presence in rural and semi-urban areas.
Its direct-to-consumer model, which ensures doorstep deliveries, reflects the company’s commitment to customer convenience.
In addition to technological advancements, Parag Milk Foods has made significant investments in sustainability.
“We are committed to implementing eco-friendly farming practices, efficient water usage, and waste management systems. These initiatives not only resonate with environmentally conscious consumers but also contribute to the long-term value of our brand,“ Shah noted.
