KENYA – Nestled in Kenya’s lush landscapes and tough climate, Meved Dairy Farm has evolved from a family milk supplier to a comprehensive dairy farm.

Meved Dairy Farm, a prominent dairy producer in Kenya, began its journey in 2007 amidst the challenges of post-election violence. Initially a vegetable farm, the Mwangi family pivoted to dairy farming after experiencing a local shortage of fresh milk.

Starting with a single zebu cow and expanding modestly, they quickly recognized a growing demand for milk within their community.

The farm’s expansion, however, faced hurdles. By mid-2008, as milk production increased, the Mwangi family encountered difficulties in managing surplus, often leading to the disposal of excess milk due to a lack of market access.

Initial efforts to join local cooperatives were unsuccessful, prompting them to seek alternative solutions.

In response, Meved Dairy began supplying milk to Kenya Co-operative Creameries (KCC), which allowed for further herd expansion.

Despite the growth, the farm faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent droughts, which led them to reduce herd size and diversify livestock.

Innovation has been a key driver of Meved Dairy’s success. The farm operates four main departments: crop production, livestock management, milk processing, and value addition.

It currently manages 75-80 acres of cultivated land to ensure a steady feed supply and maintains a milking herd that produces an average of 560 liters of milk daily.

The farm has ventured into yogurt production and other dairy products to manage surplus and diversify revenue streams. Additionally, Meved Dairy supports local farmers by purchasing their milk and providing training to improve quality.

The farm is committed to sustainability, having installed solar panels and a biodigester to support its energy needs and waste management.

Future plans include expanding solar capacity and further diversifying product offerings. Meved Dairy’s story exemplifies resilience and innovation, transforming challenges into opportunities while focusing on quality, community support, and environmental sustainability.
