FINLAND – Finnish dairy company, Valio has announced a significant investment exceeding US$65.2 million (€60 million) in its Lapinlahti plant, aimed at expanding cheese production capabilities.

The investment is set to amplify  Valio’s commitment to meeting growing consumer demand for high-quality dairy products while reinforcing its position as a leading player in the global dairy industry.

It encompasses a comprehensive overhaul of the Lapinlahti facility, including the replacement of outdated equipment and the expansion of existing infrastructure.

With construction scheduled to commence in the summer of 2024, the upgraded plant is anticipated to commence operations by the spring of 2026, ushering in a new era of enhanced efficiency and productivity.

Aleksi Ylitalo, director of the Lapinlahti plant, emphasized the pivotal role of this investment in ensuring the long-term sustainability of cheese production operations.

He highlighted that the modernization efforts aim not only to boost manufacturing capacity but also to minimize waste generation, thereby aligning with Valio’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The expansion project will see the addition of approximately 2,000 square meters of floor space to accommodate state-of-the-art cheese-making equipment and revamped packaging operations.

These upgrades are aimed to elevate the Lapinlahti plant’s production capabilities, enabling it to meet the evolving needs of both domestic and international markets.

Situated in a key region of Finnish milk production, Lapinlahti plays a vital role in Valio’s supply chain, receiving a substantial portion of the company’s raw milk supply.

The plant specializes in producing a diverse range of ripened cheeses, catering to the preferences of consumers across Finland and beyond.

Products from Lapinlahti, including popular varieties like Valio Keisarinna and Valio Hyvä suomalainen Arki, are not only cherished locally but also exported to markets in Central Europe and the United States.

In addition to cheese production, the Lapinlahti plant manufactures a variety of dairy products, including milk powder, whey powder, and lactose-free alternatives.

These products, primarily intended for export, contribute significantly to Valio’s global footprint and reputation for excellence in dairy manufacturing.

The investment in Lapinlahti reflects Valio’s broader commitment to innovation and sustainability across its operations. In recent years, the company has made substantial investments in modernizing its facilities and enhancing energy efficiency.

These initiatives reveals Valio’s dedication to minimizing its environmental impact while delivering superior-quality dairy products to consumers worldwide.

As one of the largest employers in North Savo, the Lapinlahti plant provides job opportunities for approximately 285 professionals across various disciplines, further contributing to the economic development of the region.
