KENYA – A farmer in Kangema subcounty, Kenyan Murang’a county, has encouraged residents of Mt Kenya region to incorporate goat milk into their diets to manage chronic illnesses effectively.

Citing data from the Ministry of Health in 2022, which highlighted Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Embu as leading regions for cancer cases, the farmer emphasized the importance of addressing prevalent health concerns in the area.

“Goat milk, known for its anti-inflammatory effects, presents a promising solution for individuals suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and allergies, according to several studies.”

Hellen Waruguru, the general manager of Shamba Dairy farm, highlighted the nutritional benefits of goat milk and noted its growing popularity among residents seeking alternative remedies for their health conditions.

Waruguru emphasized the ease of keeping dairy goats compared to cows, citing their lower feed consumption and space requirements.

Additionally, the farm embraces agro-ecology principles, utilizing goat droppings for fertilization and biogas production.

Value-added products derived from goat milk, including soaps, lotions, yoghurt, butter, and ghee, are gaining traction among customers due to their perceived health benefits and organic nature.

Waruguru’s farm currently produces approximately 65 litres of milk per day, with each litre fetching between Sh200 and Sh220. Value-added products such as yoghurt and soap are also sold at competitive prices.

The medicinal properties of goat milk, including higher levels of amino acids and immunomodulatory effects, make it a promising option for managing autoimmune diseases, allergies, and immune system disorders. Its antimicrobial properties further contribute to preventing infections and promoting overall health.

With increasing awareness of the benefits of goat milk, more Kenyans are turning to this nutritious alternative to manage their health conditions effectively and improve their overall well-being.
