NEW ZEALAND – New Zealand dairy brand NZMP, under Fonterra, has introduced its innovative digital Carbon Footprinter, offering customers access to emissions data for their NZMP New Zealand-sourced dairy products.
The tool also provides forecasts for potential emission reductions until 2030, contingent on Fonterra achieving its climate targets by that year.
According to Gillian Munnik, Director of Sales & Marketing, Global Markets, the Carbon Footprinter is a pioneering tool in the dairy industry, allowing customers to easily understand the emissions data of the NZMP products they purchase.
“Given that NZMP products contribute significantly to customers’ Scope 3 emissions, the tool aims to enhance transparency regarding Fonterra’s climate plans and actions related to these ingredients,” he noted.
“We know that for many of our customers, our NZMP products form a large part of their Scope 3 emissions. We are being open and transparent and making it simple for our customers to understand how our climate plans and actions directly relate to the ingredients they purchase from us.”
In addition, he revealed that customers can also select major New Zealand-sourced dairy product categories, input purchase volumes, and swiftly retrieve emissions data for the products.
Notably, to provide independent assurance of product-level emissions, customers can request Carbon Footprint Certificates through the sustainability accreditor Toitū Envirocare.
This initiative follows the release of Fonterra’s Climate Roadmap last year, outlining its emissions position and reduction strategies.
Fonterra has been actively working to reduce its climate impact, including measuring emissions across its supply chain for over 15 years and issuing annual sustainability reports since 2018.
