Lactalis expands into America’s dessert market, acquires Marie Morin

CANADA – Lactalis Canada, a subsidiary of France-based Lactalis Group has agreed to acquire dessert manufacturer Marie Morin Canada entering the North American desserts category for an undisclosed amount.

This acquisition which is specific to Marie Morin Canada and has no relation to the activities of Marie Morin France will see the Canadian division of Lactalis Group expand its presence in the dessert category, entering both the Canadian and US markets.

The move will complement Lactalis Canada’s extensive dairy portfolio, which includes cheese, table spreads, yoghurt and fluid brands.

Through the deal, Lactalis will acquire Marie Morin’s product line of desserts, featuring traditional recipes, such as its signature crème brûlée, chocolate mousse and cheesecakes.

Mark Taylor, president and CEO of Lactalis Canada, said: “We are delighted to add Marie Morin Canada and its product line of signature desserts to the Lactalis Canada family”.

“As part of our broad-based dairy portfolio that continues to evolve and expand to meet consumer trends and demands,” he added.

“This acquisition will enable Lactalis Canada to pursue its strategy in developing desserts for the North American market and will further expand our product offering for our valued retail and foodservice customers.”

In the meantime, Lactalis UK & Ireland has announced it is reinventing the cheeseburger with its latest new product, Seriously Cheese Burgers.

The new burgers feature a combination of Scottish cheddar and mozzarella creating a melting cheese centre coated in crispy breadcrumbs.

According to the company the products were created to provide consumers with a vegetarian alternative to meat-based burgers that are easy to prepare.

It added that the launch reaffirms its ability to transform its unique extra mature cheddar into a variety of engaging cheese products.

Heloise Le Norcy-Trott, group marketing and category director for Lactalis UK & Ireland noted that with Seriously’s heritage of great Scottish cheddar and the proven track record for bringing successful new products to market, the company is confident that Seriously Cheese Burgers will be a big hit with consumers.

The new cheeseburgers are available in packs of two cheese patties, with an RRP of £3. They are available to purchase in Waitrose stores and will roll out into Tesco later in the year.

The launch comes a few days after products made by Lactalis USA’s Nampa, Idaho, plant have received several awards from the American Cheese Society.

The judges awarded a gold medal to Lactalis for Galbani Marinated Fresh Mozzarella, in the category that represents cheeses marinated in liquids and ingredients and made from cow’s milk.
