UGANDA – Uganda’s premier processor of quality fresh and long-life dairy products, Jesa Farm Dairy, has received two awards at the annual Africa Food Awards; a Lifetime Achievement Award for the farm’s founder the late Dr. James Mulwana and the New Project of the Year Award for their new plant in Busunju.
The annual awards which were organised by the FW Africa were held on 16 June 2023, with participants from countries like Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Namibia, Ethiopia, Zambia, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania.
According to the company, the farms Executive Director, Geoffrey Mulwana received the awards at a Gala dinner held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
“We are extremely humbled that a family-owned business from humble beginnings in Uganda is being seen and recognized on the global stage. It all started with the vision of our founder who dared to dream big despite having no experience in the food business,” Mr Geoffrey said.
“Our awarded new plant is more than brick and mortar and is being successfully run by hard-working Ugandans.”
He added that the acknowledgement of the farm as the only Ugandan business in the prestigious awards was a true testament to the power of innovation and building a brand that people can identify with even across different borders.
“These Awards validate our drive to continuous improvement and the commitment to developing and creating solutions to complex challenges,” Jesa said in a LinkedIn post.
“We strongly believe that a commitment to innovation, cutting-edge technologies and disruptive techniques to stay ahead in today’s constantly changing world, is crucial to success in our sector.”
The new plant established in Busunju was established to expand the farm’s dairy processing operations in the country cementing its position as a leading player in Uganda’s dairy industry.
According to the project’s manager in charge of the expansion, Tunga Musorowegomo, there has been a constant rise in consumption and consequently, demand for dairy products causing pressure in the market due to inadequacy.
“It is important to let our consumers know that the expansion will ensure that the market is sufficiently stocked with quality products,” he said.
Data from the Dairy Development Authority indicated that Uganda produces 2.81 billion litres of raw milk against a national consumption demand of 800 million litres.
This has attracted both foreign and domestic investment in milk processing and the country has now licensed 130 large-scale, medium scale and cottage milk processors, processing only 30% of raw milk produced.
Today, the JESA brand, with its wide range of fresh, dairy products: namely fresh Pasteurised milk, UHT Milk, Yoghurt, Butter and Fresh has come to symbolise great taste, high quality, and innovation.
