NETHERLANDS – FrieslandCampina Ingredients has announced a strategic partnership with California-based biotechnology company, Triplebar Bio inc. to enhance capabilities in the production of cell-based protein through microbial fermentation.
The partnership will leverage FrieslandCampina’s 100-year expertise and experience in dairy and the proprietary platform deployed by Triplebar Bio that can analyze animal and microbial cell lines a lot faster than conventional screening methods.
They aim to manufacture high-quality proteins for various applications in human health all the while maintaining a limited land, water and energy footprint.
Both companies are committed to the development of innovative and future-proof protein solutions that will improve human health and also cater for the rapid growth of the world’s population.
Together, the two companies will produce microbial cells through precision fermentation to create bioactive proteins that support human health and nutrition in both early life and adulthood.
The Managing Director of Innovation at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, Anne Peter Lindeboom said, “Precision fermentation is a fast-developing technology that will shape the future of the food and nutrition industry.”
She noted that dairy ingredients will continue to play a vital role in the future of nutrition as a source of high-quality proteins and prebiotics and these remain our core offering.
As a result, the company was continuously exploring new ways that technology and nature can be harnessed to support consumers with special dietary needs – at every stage of life, Lindeboon pointed out.
“Together, I’m certain that FrieslandCampina Ingredients and Triplebar will accelerate the use of precision fermentation as a nutritious and sustainable source of protein.
By offering a full range of dairy and alternative proteins side by side, we aim to give people access to the nutritional solutions they need now and for generations to come,” she added.
The CEO of Triplebar Bio, Mario Cho, also commented, “We need to leverage science and technology to make high-quality food affordably and sustainably.
“Biotechnology can reduce pressure on traditional food production systems while making the food system more robust and boosting nutrition for everyone, from babies to adults.”
The ingredients developed under the terms of this partnership will be launched worldwide with a focus on the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Recently, FrislandCamoina Ingredients also partnered with AGT Foods and launched its first plant protein range, Plantaris.
